Booking direct with a property or airline is always your safest choice.

Having been in this business for 15 years and an avid traveler for 10 years before that it still surprises how often people blindly put their faith into online travel agencies and discount sites because of the perception of better pricing or a better deal.   Sometimes this can make sense but when you are booking your vacation or taking that important business trip isn’t it worth knowing you are getting the best information possible?  That you are speaking with the same people that will be providing the actual service to you?   I still remember one time when one of the OTA’s (Online Travel Agencies) booked a gentleman into the cheapest available room, on the 3rd floor of our B&B.   Now this man clearly indicated to the representative of the OTA that he was handicapped and indicated he could not climb steps.  It was actually in the notes that came with the reservation.   Being an old building we have no elevators.   Luckily I noticed the notes when the reservation came in and decided to call the customer to see if he would like us to move him to a room on the first floor.  What I found out is he was in a wheelchair and we are not able to accommodate that kind of special need.   In this case we averted a a problem and severe disappointment.  Who wants to start a trip off that way?   Countless other times we have to try to help upset customers who believe they booked something different than they actually did.   The reality is many OTA’s are simply selling a room or a seat on an airplane.   They can’t possibly know all the details about a property that make it unique, special, or simply a wrong fit for the customer.  They leave out the most important part which is the experience.   No one will care more about your experience and well being than the people at the properties who host you.   The next time you plan a trip consider booking directly with property.  If you find a better price on an OTA mention this and chances are the property will match it and still give you better and more personalized service.

Getting Back to America’s Playground

Getting Back to America’s Playground
Submitted by Isabella Fiore
When travelling to Atlantic City, tourists tend to be wowed by the nightlife and the entertainment that the city has to offer, but very rarely does a guest come to the Absecon Island to immerse themselves in the rich culture of the city. When people think Atlantic City, the first thought is Casinos, then Beach, then maybe some sights before heading on home. What many do not realize, is that our island still has so much connected the glory days when people used to dress up to take a stroll along the world-famous Boardwalk, before casinos ever entered the picture. That part of our beloved town is what made us great, and is something that everyone, both tourist and local alike, should become familiar with and love.
Besides the Boardwalk, which put Atlantic City on the map and held some of the best attractions from the Diving Horse to the original Steel Pier, one of the city’s oldest structures is “Abbie”, or the Absecon Lighthouse. Around since the late 1800’s and commissioned by the founder of AC, Dr. Jonathan Pitney, our Abbie still has her original Frejnel lens, and you can climb the 228 steps to the top just to see it, along with one of the best views in the city. It is a small fee to climb, but the Keeper’s House at her base is free to the public, and also serves as an active museum about our cherished Lighthouse.
Some other long-standing structures include Lucy the Elephant (actually in Margate, but we still consider her our girl), and oddly enough Resorts Casino. Before it became AC’s first casino in 1978, as well as the first casino to open up outside of Las Vegas, the original structure was comprised of two Quaker boarding houses, the Chalfonte House that opened in 1868, and the Haddon House, which opened in 1869. Both houses were bought out by the famous Leeds and Lippincott families, and were remodeled into grand hotels in the early 1900’s while keeping the main design intact. When you visit Resorts Casino, you can still see the original structures of the two buildings, making Resorts Casino have that extremely vintage look. Lucy, who’s over 135 years old, is the largest elephant in the world, is a National Historic Landmark, and was originally commissioned to be a hotel! Interesting, right?
Aside from actual historic structure, there is much of the city that celebrates the rich culture and history of our island. When you take a cruise with AC Cruises in Gardner’s Basin, you can see the old rum-runner buildings which were used during Prohibition to sneak in alcohol to the city by boat. With A1 Tours, you can not only take a Historic Boardwalk tour, walking you down the Boards while teaching you about its past, you can also take a tour inspired by HBO’S Boardwalk Empire, talking all about Atlantic City’s mob bosses. You can then visit the African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey at the Noyes Arts Garage, which holds on display all kinds of photographs and artifacts educating on AC’s diverse lineage, or stop on by Boardwalk Hall to not only see where countless artists have been hosted, but to also hear the world’s largest pipe organ, there since 1929!
Now, if you want to hear what Atlantic City used to sound like, you can always stop by Dante Hall Theater the last three weekends of July to see the 500 Club Revived show with Dave Damiani and the No Vacancy Orchestra, as they perform the big band, Rat Pack jazz that poured out of the hippest club in AC history! The 500 Club kept the city swaying from the 40’s to the 70’s, and you can witness their legacy every Friday and Saturday at 8pm for the rest of July at Dante!
No matter which way you choose to reconnect with AC’s history, be sure to at least experience some of it, for besides what I just listed, there is so much more to our city than meets the eye. So, go out and see the real America’s Playground, and as always…
See You in Atlantic City and the Jersey Shore!

THE WHO, Legendary Rock Band comes to Historic Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City in Summer 2017

Atlantic City, NJ (Mar. 20, 2017) – One of rock’s most legendary and defining bands, THE WHO announced today that they will return to Atlantic City to perform at the city’s historic venue, Boardwalk Hall, for one night only on Saturday, July 22nd. Tickets will go on sale to the public beginning Friday, March 24 at 11AM ET.

Tickets may be purchased in person at The Boardwalk Hall Box Office, by calling 800-745-3000 or online at BoardwalkHall.com and Ticketmaster.com. In addition, $1 from each ticket sold will benefit Teen Cancer America (www.teencanceramerica.org).

Fans can expect the band to take them on an ‘Amazing Journey’ through their entire career from the days of ‘THE HIGH NUMBERS’ to classic albums such as ‘WHO’S NEXT,’ ‘TOMMY,’ ‘QUADROPHENIA,’ ‘MY GENERATION’ and ‘LIVE AT LEEDS’ up to the present day

THE WHO have sold over 100 million records since forming in 1964; they brought together four different personalities and in effect produced a musical hurricane.  Each of them was a pioneer. Wildman drummer Keith Moon beat his kit with a chaotic elegance; stoic bassist John Entwistle held down the center with the melodic virtuosity of a solo guitarist; raging intellectual Pete Townshend punctuated the epic universality of his songs with the windmill slamming of his fingers across his guitar strings; and Roger Daltrey roared above it all with an impossibly virile macho swagger. They exploded conventional rhythm and blues structures, challenged pop music conventions, and redefined what was possible on stage, in the recording studio, and on vinyl. Now into their 53rd year, the band is still going strong and winning rave reviews.

Honors RJ’s Lewis Latest Work “Dummy”
By Hosting Live Stage Reading

Atlantic City, N.J., March 3, 2017 The Garden State Film Festival (GSFF) announces that Phillipsburg, NJ resident writer RJ Lewis has been selected as the 2017 winner of the Donna Lisa Rothstein Screenplay Competition for his screenplay Dummy. The Screenplay Competition was created to shine a light on the importance of a well-crafted screenplay in the overall film-making process.
The globally recognized Garden State Film Festival will present this screenplay in an exciting live reading on Saturday April 1, 2017 at 2:30 p.m. in Resorts Hotel & Casino -Green Room during the festival weekend being held March 30- April 2, 2017 in Atlantic City, New Jersey.Coordinated by the New Jersey Screenwriter’s Network, the live stage reading is performed by a cast of professional actors. This always popular live reading is free, but seating is limited so you are encouraged to secure a ticket for the capacity house by visiting www.brownpapertickets.com/event/2809356.

Dummy is a comedic tale of a father who communicates with his family via his ventriloquist dummy. The reading will include an actual dummy, which will have the audience believing he has a mind of his own.

Author Lewis has an impressive 40-year career as a live and screen performer, writer and magician. RJ has “done it all,” from Broadway to the movie set. He has appeared in off-Broadway productions and even been the stand-in for notables including Jeff Goldblum and Penn Jillette (of Penn and Teller).

As a trained variety artist Lewis’ remarkable skills include juggling, stilt-walking, fire-eating, and ventriloquism.

He has appeared as a juggler on “LAW AND ORDER”; a stilt-walking Uncle Sam for “THE APPRENTICE”; played the lead role of Todd, the tortured magician in “BEYOND BELIEF”, and recently as fire-eater Tony ‘Volcano’ Valenci in “DOWN IN FLAMES.” R.J. is no stranger to the GSFF, having appeared in the short film “Affliction,” which screened at the 2016 GSFF.

“The live screenplay reading is big highlight of the festival and always draws a full house. Those attending this year will not be disappointed. Dummy is a fast, funny, and original screenplay and we are so excited to bring RJ Lewis’ wonderful story to our audience. About the Garden State Film Festival:
The Garden State Film Festival (GSFF) was envisioned by 25-year film industry veteran Diane Raver and the late Hollywood actor Robert Pastorelli in 2002 and launched the following year. Since 2003, thousands of films have made their public premiers, hundreds of thousands of people from around the world have attended; and the total infusion of cash to local businesses since inception exceeds $5 million. Until 2013, the Festival was held in Asbury Park. In 2014, the Festival moved to Atlantic City with financial and operation support from the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA). GSFF now serves as a major component of the strategic plan to promote arts and culture in Atlantic City to re-establish the resort as the premier Mid-Atlantic entertainment destination. The GSFF is a 501-c-3 non-profit organization. For more information about the Garden State Film Festival, contact: info@gsff.org
