Atlantic City, New Jersey: The Historic Organ Restoration Committee is pleased to announce their second season of free daily concerts began on Monday, May 11, 2015, on the Midmer-Losh Pipe Organ in the main hall Monday-Friday at 12:00 noon, followed by a chance to meet the organist of the hall Dr. Steven Ball and take a free guided ½ hour organ tour. The Midmer-Losh, was built between 1929 and 1932 by the Midmer-Losh Organ Company of Merrick, Long Island, N.Y.
Weighing in at a staggering 150 tons, the instrument is original to the building and completely concealed behind the exquisite gilded grillwork around the main auditorium, the iconography of which depicts stylized sea creatures and plants. It is the first version of what we now think of as “surround-sound” and is the largest musical instrument ever constructed. The main console which controls the instrument is located on the right (house) side of the proscenium arch is the only to ever have seven manual keyboards in addition to the pedal keyboard and 1,235 stop tablets to control the 33,112 pipes.
The first recital on the completed organ was played on May 11, 1932 by James Scott Winter. The instrument historically was used for daily ½ hour noon recitals and for all public events in the building until the great hurricane of September 12, 1944 which has ever since silenced its’ full magnificent and thunderous voice. After 8 years of restoration effort by the Historic Organ Restoration Committee (HORC) approximately 20% of the instrument was made available for the first time publicly in decades at the Miss America Pageant in 2013. Continuing restoration efforts are on track to return as much as possibly 50% to functionality by 2016.
In addition, the Historic Organ Restoration Committee is pleased to present its next installment in their silent film series with Buster Keaton in The General on Sunday, May 31, 2015 at 7:00pm in the Ballroom at Boardwalk Hall. One of the most revered comedies of the silent era, this film finds hapless Southern railroad engineer Johnny Gray (Buster Keaton) facing off against Union soldiers during the American Civil War. When Johnny’s fiancée, Annabelle Lee (Marion Mack), is accidentally taken away while on a train stolen by Northern forces, Gray pursues the soldiers, using various modes of transportation in comic action scenes that highlight Keaton’s boundless wit and dexterity. Tickets are $20.00 and available at The Boardwalk Hall Box Office, all Ticketmaster locations, at ticketmaster.com or by calling 1.800.736.1420.
For additional information on the daily recitals and tours, please contact Steven Ball at 609.348.7499 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
